The seven bowls, the plagues, constitute God's punishment upon those who have taken the mark of the beast and worship its image. Starting from chapter 16, the Book of Revelation opens the scene on the end times preceding the return of Christ, focusing its attention on the terrible events that constitute God's punishment upon men who bear the mark of the beast and worship its image. Seven plagues are poured out with great force upon the earth by the angels executing the punishment. God is punishing those who have refused to heed the warning brought by the angels and have taken the mark of the beast.
